Drive-in racking

Drive-in racking removes most of the aisles from a warehouse by letting the truck drive into the lane and place pallets several deep on supporting rails. It is the system for holding a small number of lines in large volume, and Rejuva designs, supplies and installs it across Europe.

How drive-in and drive-through racking work

Both systems are built from the same structure: lanes of uprights carrying rails at each storage level, with no beams across the front, so a truck can enter the lane and set pallets down one behind another. Removing the aisles between every run is what turns floor into storage, and it is why these systems reach a density conventional pallet racking cannot.

A drive-in lane is closed at the back and loaded and unloaded from one end, which makes it last in, first out. Stock that turns over as a batch, or that has a long shelf life, suits that pattern. A drive-through lane is open at both ends, loaded from one side and picked from the other, which makes it first in, first out and suits dated goods that have to rotate.

The rails are adjustable, so a lane can be set for the pallet you actually run rather than for a standard size. What the lane cannot do is give you a pallet in the middle without moving the ones in front of it, and that is the trade the density is bought with.

What drive-in racking gives you

  • Floor that was aisle becomes storage

    Trucks work inside the lanes instead of between every run, so the aisle count drops and the pallet count rises inside the same building.

  • More stock without more building

    Holding the same volume in less floor area postpones the overflow site, the extension or the move, which is where the real cost of running out of space sits.

  • Fewer, longer truck movements

    Loading a lane deep rather than a bay wide means fewer approaches for the same number of pallets, which shortens the time a delivery takes to put away.

  • A choice of rotation

    Drive-in for stock that leaves as a batch, drive-through where dates or batch numbers mean the oldest pallet has to go first.

  • Suited to cold storage

    A compact block holds less air to keep cold than the same pallets spread across a wide-aisle layout, which is why refrigerated buildings reach for it early.

Where drive-in and drive-through racking are used

The pattern is always the same: few lines, many pallets of each, and a rotation the lane can support.

  • Bulk storage

    Large volumes of identical goods, where the whole point is density and nobody needs to reach a single pallet in the middle of a block.

  • Cold and chilled storage

    Where the cost per cubic metre is high enough that giving up some direct access is obviously the right trade.

  • Seasonal stock

    Goods that build up over months and leave over weeks, held compactly through the off-peak and cleared as a block.

  • Food and drink

    Drive-through in particular, where batch numbers and dates mean the first pallet in has to be the first pallet out.

  • Automotive and industrial parts

    Bulky, heavy and repetitive stock, where the load capacity of the frame matters as much as the density.

What a drive-in project has to get right

Lane depth is a design decision rather than a preference: it follows how many pallets of each line you hold, how often the block is worked and how far a truck can enter safely with a raised load. Too deep and lanes stand part-empty, which gives back the density they were built for.

Entry damage is the other thing to design against, because a truck working inside a lane passes within centimetres of the uprights. Guides, guard rails and end protection are part of the specification, not an extra, and the frames need inspecting in service under EN 15635 like any other racking.
