Pallet racking

Pallet racking is the reference storage system for palletised goods: upright frames and horizontal beams that hold every pallet where a truck can reach it directly. What industrial pallet racking is, and where it fits

Industrial pallet racks hold palletised goods off the floor on upright frames and horizontal beams, so the height of the building becomes storage rather than empty air. In most warehouses they are the backbone of the operation: the aisle widths, the truck choice, the lighting layout and the traffic routes all follow the racking rather than the other way round.

The system suits a small operation holding a few hundred pallets as readily as a distribution centre holding tens of thousands, because it scales by adding bays rather than by changing principle. What changes with scale is the layout, the truck, and how far the design has to be pushed towards density before selectivity starts to cost you.

What pallet racking gives you

    Vertical space that is otherwise unused becomes pallet positions, which raises capacity inside the same four walls instead of through more floor area.

  • Warehousing and distribution

    High throughput and many separate lines, where direct access to each pallet matters more than fitting in the last one.

  • Manufacturing

    Raw material at one end of the building and finished goods at the other, often with different pallet weights and sizes in the same run.

  • Retail and wholesale

    Large volumes across a wide product range, replenished on a cycle that does not tolerate a slow pick face.

  • E-commerce fulfilment

    Reserve stock held on pallets above a hand-picked face, so the pickers work at floor level and the racking holds the backup.

  • Cold storage

    Where every cubic metre is expensive to keep cold, which pushes the design harder towards density than it would go in an ambient building.

How a pallet racking layout is adapted

Selective single-deep racking is the starting point, and most designs move away from it only where the numbers justify it. Double-deep adds a second pallet behind the first and needs a telescopic-fork truck. Very narrow aisle cuts the aisles back to what a guided truck needs and converts the reclaimed floor into pallet positions. High-rise layouts push the frames up to the limit of the building and the lift height.

Beam levels are set from the real pallet heights rather than from a standard pitch, since a wrongly spaced level wastes the same air the racking was bought to recover. Where the stock profile is mixed, different bays in the same run can be pitched differently.

Frequently asked questions about pallet racking

What is the difference between selective and double-deep pallet racking?

Selective racking gives direct access to every pallet from the aisle. Double-deep stores pallets two rows deep, which fits more pallets into the same floor area but means the front pallet has to be moved to reach the one behind it, and it needs a truck with a telescopic fork.

How high can pallet racking be built?

The limit comes from the building and the handling equipment rather than from the racking: usable clear height, floor flatness and load capacity, sprinkler and lighting positions, and the lift height of the trucks you run. A survey settles it before anything is quoted.

Can pallet racking be extended later?

Yes. Runs are extended by adding frames and beams to the existing line, and levels can be repositioned as pallet heights change. Extending a system that is already loaded needs the layout re-checked, because bay loads and aisle widths change with it.

Does pallet racking have to be inspected?

Racking in use is inspected under EN 15635. Rejuva carries out expert inspections, classifies damage by risk and issues a written report you can act on, and can carry out the repairs that report calls for.
