Safety barriers
Most of what goes wrong between a forklift and a person happens where their routes overlap. Safety barriers make that overlap physical rather than painted: walkways that vehicles cannot enter, work zones that traffic passes by, and access that is controlled at the gate rather than by a notice.
What a barrier is actually for
An industrial building needs a clear separation between pedestrians, vehicles and the areas where neither should be. Without it, people work within a step of moving machinery all day, and the risk is carried by whoever happens to be paying least attention at the time.
Barriers create that boundary, control who gets into a restricted area and mark the zones where a mistake would be expensive. They belong to the same argument as line marking and lighting: none of them stops a driver, and together they make the right route the obvious one.
Where each type belongs

Guard rails
Also called safety railing. A physical boundary where there is a fall risk or where machinery has to be kept away from people, from a mezzanine edge to the perimeter of a production area.

Forklift barriers
High visibility barriers that hold a distance between forklift routes and the walkways and workstations beside them, which is where most collisions between the two would otherwise happen.

Ground level barriers
Low profile separation between walkways and vehicle traffic, at entrances, exits and around equipment, where sightlines matter as much as the barrier itself.

Safety gates
Controlled access into a restricted zone, self-closing or manual, with the locking arrangement chosen so that the gate is still shut on the fiftieth pass and not only on the first.

Pedestrian barriers
Separation for the people walking through an area where vehicles work, in high visibility colours and, where the lighting is poor, with reflective elements.

Certified, and tested how
A barrier should meet the applicable standards and carry a certificate. What is worth asking for is the test behind it: what was driven at it, how fast, and what happened to the barrier afterwards.

Built for the environment
Materials that stand up to daily contact with forklifts and pallet trucks, in a building that is cold, wet or busy around the clock, which is where cheap systems fail first.

The details that decide it
Self-closing mechanisms, locks, signage and visibility are what determine whether a barrier does its job when nobody is watching, which is the only time that matters.
Barriers in the layout, not on top of it
A barrier only works where the route it protects makes sense. Put one across a shortcut people need and it will be climbed over within a week, which is why the layout of the walkways is part of the same conversation.
